Torikizoku

Torikizoku is an Osaka-born yakitori chain built on a single, radical pricing idea: every item on the menu, food or drink, costs a flat ¥298 (roughly $2), a model the chain pioneered and that has since been widely copied across Japan's izakaya sector. Despite the uniform pricing, the kitchen maintains real quality on its grilled skewers, with chicken skin, tsukune (minced chicken meatballs), and gyu-kushi (beef skewers) standing out as reliably good orders across the many Osaka locations. Skewers are grilled to order over charcoal or open flame depending on the branch, and the menu extends beyond yakitori into fried dishes, salads, and rice bowls, all still governed by the same flat price. The dining room character is casual and unpretentious, closer to a neighborhood drinking spot than a destination restaurant, with the format built for ordering freely and often since cost is never a consideration mid-meal. Beverages follow the same ¥298 rule, covering beer, highballs, and sours, making it an easy venue for a low-cost evening of grazing and drinking. Reservations are generally unnecessary given the chain's many locations across the city, and the format rewards treating the menu the way locals do — ordering broadly rather than carefully, since nothing on it carries a premium.
