Umeda Sky Building

The Umeda Sky Building, completed in 1993 in Kita Ward, consists of two 40-story towers connected near their summits by the Floating Garden Observatory, a ring-shaped open-air platform that appears to hover between the two structures. Visitors reach the top via a set of glass-walled escalators that cross an open void between the towers on the building's upper floors, a dramatic and somewhat vertiginous approach that is itself part of the experience before reaching the 360-degree observation deck. From the top, views extend across Osaka's skyline and, on clear days, toward the mountains ringing the Osaka plain. Below the towers, the Takimi Koji basement level recreates a Showa-era (mid-20th-century) retro dining alley with small restaurants styled after old Osaka streets, offering a contrast to the ultramodern architecture above. A visit to the observation deck alone takes about an hour; combining it with the basement dining area extends a visit to two hours. Sunset draws the largest crowds, as visitors watch daylight give way to the city's lights, and purchasing tickets online in advance helps avoid the ticket-counter queue that forms in the final hour before sunset.
