Hiroshima — Peace Memorial & Itsukushima Shrine

  • Distance150 km
  • Travel time30–50 minutes
  • TransportShinkansen (Nozomi or Sakura) from Okayama to Hiroshima (30–50 min, ¥3,750 / ~$25 unreserved); JR Pass valid on Sakura/Hikari. Add Miyajima Island (Itsukushima): JR San'yo Line to Miyajimaguchi then ferry (10 min, ¥200 / ~$1.35)
  • Rating★ 5.0
  • Best seasonYear-round; avoid August 6 (anniversary, very crowded)

This pairs Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park and Museum with Miyajima island's Itsukushima Shrine, reachable from Okayama by shinkansen in under an hour — two demanding destinations in one day, which is enough without adding a third stop. The morning is sombre and historical; the afternoon on Miyajima is a shrine, a mountain and wild deer, a deliberate change of register. It's the longest day by the standards of the other Okayama trips and needs an early start.

Highlights

  • Atomic Bomb Dome — the skeletal ruin of the former Industrial Promotion Hall, left standing as it was after the 1945 bombing
  • Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum — the collection of personal artifacts is what makes the visit land; budget real time here, not a walk-through
  • Itsukushima Shrine's floating torii — the vermillion gate appears to float at high tide and stands on exposed sand at low tide, so tide timing changes the experience
  • Mount Misen — reached by ropeway from Miyajima, with hiking trails and views back across the Inland Sea
  • Miyajima's deer — free-roaming and used to visitors around the shrine approach and the town's shopping street
