Paragliding at Hiruzen Highlands

Paragliding at Hiruzen Highlands is a tandem paragliding experience run by the Hiruzen Paragliding School from a launch site above Hiruzengen-onsen in the Hiruzen Highland area of Maniwa city, northern Okayama. The activity type is tandem paragliding, where a certified instructor pilots the glider with the passenger harnessed alongside, so no prior flying experience is needed; participants should be in reasonably good health, able to run a short distance for launch and landing, and within the operator's weight limits, and there is typically a minimum age requirement that the school confirms at booking. All flight equipment, including the paragliding wing, harness, and helmet, is provided, while flyers should bring a warm jacket since temperatures at altitude run 5 to 8 degrees Celsius lower than at ground level, closed-toe shoes for a stable launch run, and should avoid loose scarves or accessories that could tangle in the lines. The Hiruzen Paragliding School requires advance reservation and gives every tandem passenger a pre-flight safety briefing covering the launch run, in-flight body position, and the landing procedure, with the instructor carrying the primary responsibility for reading wind and thermal conditions and aborting a launch if conditions are unsafe; in the rare case of an in-flight issue, the tandem instructor is trained to manage a controlled descent and emergency landing. The Hiruzen plateau's open highland terrain and steady thermal winds make it one of the more established paragliding sites in the Chugoku region, with tandem flights lasting 15 to 25 minutes and a half-day package including ground instruction running 3 to 4 hours. The best season is April to May and September to October, when wind conditions are most stable and visibility across the highland is clearest; flights operate April through November, but midsummer thermals can be more turbulent and flights are more frequently postponed for wind or lightning risk in that window.
