Jazz Bar Fuga

Jazz Bar Fuga is a compact, low-lit venue in Hamanomachi, Nagasaki's central shopping and dining quarter, seating around thirty across a bar counter and a scattering of small tables. The crowd is mixed in age, from jazz-loving regulars in their forties and older to younger couples and visiting travelers, with an unhurried, listening-room atmosphere rather than a loud social scene; there is no dress code beyond smart-casual expectations typical of Japanese bars. Live jazz trios and duos play Wednesday through Saturday, generally starting around 9:00PM, covering standards and bebop with occasional Japanese jazz vocalists; on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday closures the venue does not operate, and on off nights when it is open the extensive vinyl collection fills in with classic recordings through the house speakers. The drinks list centers on whisky highballs, gin cocktails, and a modest wine selection rather than an elaborate cocktail programme. Doors open at 8:00PM and the bar runs to 2:00AM. A ¥500 (about $3.25) music charge applies on weekends when the live sets play, while weeknights (when open) are cover-free; the room is small enough that reservations are recommended for weekend live sets.
