Hirado Island Walking Trails

Hirado Island's walking trails center on Hirado City in northern Nagasaki Prefecture, reached from Nagasaki via a JR train to Sasebo (70 minutes, ¥2,270/$14.76), followed by a bus to Hirado Guchi, the Matsuura Railway to Tabira-Hiradoguchi, and a bus across the Hirado Bridge into Hirado City; no permit is required. Distances vary by route, with the castle-to-Sakikata Park circuit covering approximately 5 km and 100-150 meters of elevation gain over undulating island terrain, a moderate walk with several short climbs. The surface is mixed pavement in town, transitioning to packed dirt and grass paths near Sakikata Park, partly shaded by pine groves near the coast with open, exposed stretches along cliff-top sections. Landmarks include Hirado Castle overlooking the harbor, Sakikata Park's coastal pine forest and lighthouse, and views across to the Hirado Bridge spanning to the mainland; the park entrance makes a reasonable turnaround point for a shorter loop. There are no refuge huts along the route, but restrooms and vending machines are available near Hirado Castle and at Sakikata Park.
