Afternoons are well spent soaking in one of the town's public bathhouses or ryokan day-spas, many of which offer milky sulfuric waters said to soften skin, before browsing the small strip of onsen-town shops selling steamed eggs and local pickles. Unzen is a year-round destination, with azaleas covering the surrounding hills in May and June and maple foliage turning the highlands red and gold in October and November; winter visits pair well with the chance of light snow around the vents. Lunch options cluster near the Jigoku entrance and along the main onsen street, ranging from soba noodle shops to cafes serving onsen-steamed dishes. Given the walking is limited to well-maintained boardwalks and town streets, the outing suits most fitness levels and makes an easy half-day trip that can be combined with a stop in nearby Shimabara.
