Goto Islands (Fukue Island)

The Goto Islands lie 100 kilometers west of Nagasaki and are reached in about 1 hour 50 minutes by jetfoil high-speed ferry from Nagasaki Port's Ohato Terminal to Fukue Island, at ¥4,400 one way, with a slower regular ferry option available for ¥2,500 over roughly 3 hours. Fukue, the largest of the islands, blends a small castle town with dramatic coastal scenery, including the Dozaki Church, one of the oldest Catholic churches in the region built by early Christian communities who took refuge here during Japan's era of religious persecution. A day usually begins with the morning jetfoil arrival, followed by picking up a rental bicycle at Fukue Port for ¥1,000-2,000 a day, which is the most practical way to reach the coastal churches and Nagata Beach's white sand and clear water on the island's western side. Afternoons can be spent exploring the ruins of Ishida Castle in Fukue town or continuing by bicycle or bus to Kashiwazaki Park's cliffside lookout over the East China Sea. Local restaurants in Fukue town serve fresh seafood including Goto udon, a thin, hand-pulled noodle specialty unique to the islands, best enjoyed with a simple broth and flying fish stock. May through October offers the calmest ferry crossings and the best beach weather, though the island church architecture and rugged coastline are worth seeing in most seasons. Because covering the island's spread-out sights requires cycling or bus transfers over uneven island roads, this trip demands more physical effort than a typical single-site day trip, and travelers should confirm the return jetfoil schedule before setting out to avoid missing the last sailing.
