Megane-bashi (Spectacles Bridge)

Megane-bashi, or Spectacles Bridge, spans the Nakashima River in central Nagasaki and is considered the oldest stone arch bridge in Japan, built in 1634 by a Chinese Zen monk from the nearby Kofukuji Temple. The bridge takes its name from the reflection of its two stone arches in the calm river water, which together form a shape resembling a pair of spectacles, a view best seen from the riverbank paths just downstream. The surrounding stretch of the Nakashima River has been developed into a pleasant walking path lined with willow trees and a series of smaller stone bridges, and the area is dotted with heart-shaped stones set into the riverside walls, a popular photo tradition for couples. A visit to see the bridge and stroll the immediate riverbank takes twenty to thirty minutes, though the path can easily be extended into a longer walk connecting toward Chinatown or Suwa Shrine. Early morning brings the calmest water for the clearest spectacle-shaped reflection, and golden hour light on the pale stone arches is popular with photographers. The bridge sits in the middle of downtown Nagasaki, making it an easy stop to combine with a broader walking tour of the city center rather than a standalone destination.
