Norikura Kodama Nature Trail

The Norikura Kodama Nature Trail is a 5 km loop across the alpine plateau of Norikura Kogen in Matsumoto City, Nagano, starting near the Tatamidaira bus terminal at roughly 2,700 m elevation, one of the highest points reachable by public shuttle bus in Japan. Access requires an Alpico Bus to Norikura Kogen followed by a private shuttle bus up the Echo Line to Tatamidaira, since private vehicles are barred from the upper road during the summer season. The trail itself follows a mostly boardwalk and gravel path across open alpine tundra with only minor undulation, making it one of the gentler high-altitude walks in the Northern Alps. Along the way, the route passes Kata-numa pond, patches of surviving snow into midsummer, and views of Mount Norikura's volcanic crater peaks including Ken-ga-mine. Shade is minimal since the trail sits above the treeline, so sun exposure is significant despite the cool temperatures. There are no water sources on the loop itself, though the Tatamidaira terminal has a rest house with drinking water, food, and restrooms. Weather on the plateau shifts quickly, with fog and wind common even in clear conditions, so hikers should check visibility before setting out. The loop can be extended with a side trail toward Ken-ga-mine summit for those wanting a more strenuous add-on.
