Hamayu sits near Aoshima on Miyazaki's Nichinan Coast, drawing its menu directly from the catch brought in by local fishing boats each morning. The kitchen keeps preparations simple and seafood-forward: a seafood donburi piled with the day's fish over rice, katsuo (bonito) tataki seared and served with citrus and garlic, and a sashimi set that changes with what came off the boats that day. This proximity to the fishing port means the specific fish on offer can shift day to day, and staff are generally happy to point out what's freshest. The dining room is a relaxed, beach-town restaurant with a casual, easygoing feel that matches its location a short walk from Aoshima's shrine and famous Devil's Washboard rock formations — sandals and beachwear are common among the lunch crowd. There is no formal wine list; the drink options are limited to beer, a small sake selection, and soft drinks, in keeping with the casual seafood-shack character of the restaurant. Reservations are not required for most visits but are worth making for weekend lunch, when the restaurant fills with both tourists visiting Aoshima and local diners. The restaurant closes on Wednesdays.
