Takachiho Gorge Walking Path

The Takachiho Gorge Walking Path starts at the gorge entrance near Mitai in Takachiho Town, about 90 minutes by car from Miyazaki City or reachable by bus from Nobeoka Station; a paid car park and boat rental kiosk sit at the trailhead. No permit is needed. The path runs roughly 1 km one-way along the base of the basalt gorge carved by the Gokase River, with a flat paved surface for most of its length and a set of stone steps near the Manai Falls viewpoint, the trail's principal landmark and a natural turn-around point for those not continuing to the upper rim. Elevation change is minimal, but constant mist from the falls and river keeps the rock underfoot slick, and the columnar basalt walls tower close overhead, so there is little shade relief from summer heat but also little sun exposure in the gorge itself. There are no water sources or shelters along the path; the walk is short enough that most visitors do not need to carry supplies, though vending machines and restrooms are available near the entrance. The path can close temporarily after heavy rain when the river rises, so checking conditions locally before visiting is worthwhile.
