Kaeda Gorge River Walk

The Kaeda Gorge river walk starts at the small car park in Kaeda, Kushima City, about 90 minutes by car south of Miyazaki City and often combined with a visit to nearby Cape Toi; there is no public transit and no permit is required. The out-and-back path covers just 1.2 km along the Kaeda River and takes 45-60 minutes at a relaxed pace, with a flat, packed-dirt and stone surface and minimal elevation change throughout. The gorge walls provide partial shade for much of the route, and the riverside footing is generally stable, though rocks near the water's edge can be slippery when wet. The main landmark is a series of smooth, weathered rock formations and small cascades along the riverbed, particularly striking when framed by autumn foliage; the head of the gorge, where the path narrows, serves as the natural turn-around point. There are no water sources for drinking or shelters along the walk, and the short distance means most visitors carry little beyond a camera and light layer.
