Toi Misaki Beach (Cape Toi Cove)

Toi Misaki Beach is a small, remote cove near Cape Toi (Toi-misaki), about 100 km south of Miyazaki City at the southern tip of the prefecture. The sand is coarse and pale, giving way quickly to rocky sections and clear, calm water sheltered somewhat by the cape's headland, which makes conditions generally gentler than the exposed surf beaches further north. The cove is compact rather than a long open beach, tucked below the grassy Cape Toi promontory that is famous for its herd of wild Misaki horses grazing on the cliffside meadows above. Snorkeling is popular in the clear water close to the rocky sections, where visibility is good on calm days. Facilities are minimal -- there is car parking near the cape, but no lifeguards, shops, or showers directly at the beach -- so the vibe is quiet and undeveloped, appealing to visitors seeking a secluded swim or snorkel away from the busier Miyazaki City beaches. Reaching Toi Misaki requires a car, as it sits roughly 90 minutes south of Miyazaki City via Routes 220 and 448; there is no practical public transit option to the beach itself. Most visitors combine a stop here with walking the cape's coastal trail to see the horses and the Cape Toi Lighthouse, making the beach one stop on a longer scenic drive along the southern Nichinan coastline rather than a standalone destination.
