Obi Castle Town (Obi-jo & Edo Streets)

Obi Castle Town, in Nichinan City south of Miyazaki, preserves the former castle seat of the Ito clan, who ruled the Obi domain for nearly 300 years during the Edo period. Visitors enter through the reconstructed Otemon gate and climb through the stone-walled castle grounds, where the Matsu-no-Maru palace building has been rebuilt on its original foundations and the Obi History Museum displays samurai armor, weapons, and domain-era documents. Below the castle, the Yoshokan samurai residence offers a rare, intact look at how a high-ranking retainer family lived, with its formal garden and tatami reception rooms open to visitors. The adjoining merchant streets retain white plaster walls and stone-paved lanes lined with old shops selling local sweets such as obi-ten fried fish cakes. A thorough visit covering the castle grounds, museum, Yoshokan, and a walk through the Edo-period streets takes 2-3 hours; renting a bicycle from the tourist office near Obi Station is a practical way to cover the wider town more quickly. The castle's plum trees bloom in February, drawing modest local crowds, while most other times of year the town remains uncrowded outside of weekend day-trippers arriving from Miyazaki City.
