Ebino Kogen Highland Plateau

Ebino Kogen is a volcanic highland plateau at roughly 1,200 meters elevation in the Kirishima mountain range on the Miyazaki-Kagoshima border, reached via a winding mountain road from Ebino City. The plateau is dotted with several crater lakes formed by past volcanic activity, most notably the emerald-green Rokkannon Miike and the smaller Fudo Ike, connected by a roughly 6 km circuit trail that passes through pine forest and open grassland with views of the active Mount Karakuni and Mount Shinmoe volcanic peaks. Walking the full crater lake loop takes about 2 hours at a moderate pace, while shorter out-and-back walks to individual lakes can be done in under an hour; visitors with more time can continue onto steeper trails toward the surrounding peaks for half-day hikes. The Visitor Center near the trailhead provides maps and current weather and trail-condition updates, which are worth checking given the plateau's exposure to sudden temperature drops even in summer. April and May bring alpine wildflowers to the grasslands, while November and December offer frost-covered ground and the clearest long-distance views; winter snow occasionally closes the access road. Weekday mornings are the quietest time, since weekend hiking groups from Miyazaki and Kagoshima commonly arrive by mid-morning.
