Temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, Kyoto
Tofuku-ji
One of Kyoto's great Zen temple complexes, Tofuku-ji is famous for its spectacular autumn maple foliage that transforms the Tsutenkyo (Bridge to Heaven) into one of Kyoto's most breathtaking scenes. The complex includes Kyoto's largest Sanmon gate, a modern karesansui garden designed by Mirei Shigemori in 1938 (mixing traditional and modernist elements), and a magnificent Zen meditation hall. The autumn foliage here is arguably the finest in Kyoto.
