Ninna-ji is an imperial temple complex founded in 888 CE by Emperor Uda, who himself became its first head priest upon abdication. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the complex includes a five-story pagoda (one of Kyoto's finest), elaborate painted halls, and the famous Omuro Cherry Blossom garden with late-blooming Omuro cherries that flower two weeks after other Kyoto cherry trees. The temple served as home to imperial princes who became its abbots for generations.

Hours: 9:00AM-5:00PM (March-November); 9:00AM-4:30PM (December-February)

Best time: Mid-April for late-blooming Omuro cherry blossoms (2 weeks after main cherry season)
