Minato Mirai 21

Minato Mirai 21 is Yokohama's purpose-built waterfront district, developed from the 1980s on reclaimed land along Yokohama Bay in Kanagawa Prefecture. The name, meaning 'future port 21,' captures the district's ambitions: it combines corporate towers, cultural institutions, retail malls, public parks, and an amusement park in a cohesive urban environment planned around pedestrian experience. The district is anchored by Yokohama Landmark Tower — at 296 metres, once Japan's tallest building — and defines Yokohama's contemporary skyline as seen from the bay.

At street level, Minato Mirai rewards leisurely exploration. The waterfront Kishamichi Promenade follows a former railway line along the harbour, connecting the Red Brick Warehouse to the base of Landmark Tower. Rinko Park's lawns and cycle paths hug the bay, offering unobstructed views of moored ships and the Yokohama Bay Bridge. The Cosmo Clock 21 ferris wheel, illuminated nightly in changing colours, rises above Cosmo World amusement park on the waterfront plaza.

Cultural draws within the district include the Yokohama Museum of Art, a modern and contemporary art institution housed in a Kenzo Tange-designed building, and the Cup Noodles Museum, an interactive exhibition celebrating instant noodle history. MARK IS and Queen's Square shopping malls serve practical and gastronomic needs, while seasonal events — outdoor cinema in summer, illumination festivals in winter — animate the promenades.

Evening is the district's strongest hour. The reflected lights of Landmark Tower, the Cosmo Clock, and the Intercontinental Hotel shimmer across the harbour in what is frequently ranked among Japan's top nighttime cityscapes. A full day exploring museums, the observatory, the promenade, and evening illuminations makes for a rewarding visit without ever leaving the district.
