Hokkaido is Japan's northernmost and second-largest island, renowned for its pristine wilderness, world-class powder snow, and vibrant seasonal beauty. From the lavender-carpeted fields of Furano to the UNESCO-listed Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido offers Japan's most dramatic natural landscapes alongside excellent seafood and dairy cuisine.
Hokkaido has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb/Dfc) with four sharply distinct seasons and no tsuyu (rainy season) — unlike the rest of Japan. Winters are long and cold, with Sapporo averaging 6 metres of snow per season and inland temperatures reaching -25°C. Summers are mild and dry (July highs around 25–26°C), far cooler and less humid than Tokyo or Osaka. Hokkaido is Japan's first region to see autumn foliage (Daisetsuzan from mid-September) and the last to see cherry blossoms (Sapporo late April, northern Hokkaido early May).

What to expect in each part of the year.
Winter
Long, cold, and snowbound. Sapporo averages 6m of snow per winter. The world-class powder skiing at Niseko and Furano, the Sapporo Snow Festival (February), drift ice off the Okhotsk coast, and volcanic onsen bathing in snowscapes make winter one of Hokkaido's most spectacular seasons.

Spring
A late, slow arrival of spring — snow lingers in the mountains through April. Cherry blossoms arrive weeks after mainland Japan (Hakodate late April, Sapporo late April to early May). The Goryokaku Fort moat with cherry blossoms is one of Japan's great spring scenes.

Summer
Mild, dry, and vivid. No rainy season unlike mainland Japan. Lavender peaks at Farm Tomita in mid-July. Furano and Biei flower fields are at maximum colour in July–August. Hiking in Daisetsuzan and Shiretoko is at its best. Fresh corn, melon, and Hokkaido seafood season.

Autumn
Japan's earliest autumn foliage begins on Daisetsuzan's high peaks from mid-September — weeks before mainland Japan. Sounkyo Gorge and Jozankei valley peak in October. Salmon season, hairy crab season, and magnificent landscape photography conditions.

Hakodate Port Festival (Minato Matsuri)
Hakodate's traditional summer festival with the Ika Odori (Squid Dance) — thousands of citizens dance the traditional harvest dance through the streets, with harbour fireworks.
Daisetsuzan Autumn Foliage
Japan's earliest autumn foliage begins on Daisetsuzan's high peaks in mid-September — up to 4–6 weeks before mainland Japan. The alpine colour descends to valley level by mid-October.
Sapporo Autumn Fest
