Top 10 Beaches
The best beaches Hokkaido has to offer.
Shakotan Blue Beach (Shakotan Peninsula)
The Shakotan Peninsula is home to Hokkaido's most celebrated coastal scenery. The water here — known as 'Shakotan Blue' — is an extraordinary transparent turquoise created by the combination of cold, pure water, white pebble seabeds, and clear summer skies. Several beach access points along the peninsula's western cape offer swimming and snorkeling, with the most popular spots around Shimamui Coast and Cape Kamui.
Shimamui Coast
Shimamui Coast is arguably the most visually striking accessible beach in Hokkaido. Reached via a short tunnel through the cliffside, the beach opens to a dramatic view of turquoise water, white pebbles, and towering rock formations. The intense blue-green colour of the water in summer is genuinely remarkable. The beach itself is small — roughly 200m of pebbles — which keeps it from becoming overcrowded.
Otaru Beaches (Zenibako and Otarunai)
Otaru's coastline along the Sea of Japan has several accessible beach areas popular with Sapporo residents looking for an easy day trip. Zenibako Beach and Otarunai Beach are sandy and pebble beaches with calmer conditions than the Shakotan Peninsula. The water clarity is good but not as exceptional as Shakotan. These beaches get busy with families in peak summer.
Hamatonbetsu Beach
Located on the Sea of Okhotsk coast in northern Hokkaido, Hamatonbetsu is a long sandy beach unusual for Hokkaido in its extent and sandy character. The surrounding area includes Clover Campsite, popular in summer, and the beach is adjacent to Michinoeku Hamatonbetsu service area. The Sea of Okhotsk coast has a wild, frontier character distinct from Hokkaido's Pacific or Japan Sea coasts.
Rishiri Island Coast
Rishiri Island rises dramatically from the Sea of Japan as a near-perfect volcanic cone, and its coastline offers stunning views of Mount Rishiri (1,721m) reflecting in clear water. The coast is more rocky than sandy, with pebble beaches and fishing ports. Swimming is very cold even in summer, but the island's coastal scenery — especially at Oshidomari and Senhoshi Cape — is spectacular and increasingly popular with photographers and nature tourists.
Rebun Island Hamanaka Beach
Rebun Island — the northernmost inhabited island of Japan's main island chain — is known for its extraordinary alpine wildflower meadows and rugged Sea of Japan coastline. Hamanaka Beach is one of the accessible beach areas, with cold, clear water and coastal scenery backed by flower-covered hills. Swimming is only for the very cold-tolerant, but the coastal scenery and hiking are exceptional.
Hokkigai Beach (Tomari Village, Shakotan)
The Tomari Village coastal area on the southern Shakotan Peninsula has accessible beaches popular with local families. Less dramatic than the northern Shakotan coves but more user-friendly, with calmer water and more beach facilities. Hokkigai (surf clam) is abundant in this area and is a popular local food. The beach gets busy on summer weekends with Sapporo day-trippers.
