Cafe Haruna (Haruna Lake)

Cafe Haruna is a lakefront cafe and light-meal venue on the shores of Haruna Lake in the Haruna area of Takasaki City, Gunma. Haruna Lake is a caldera lake formed within the crater of Mount Haruna, a dormant stratovolcano, at an elevation of approximately 1,084 metres; the combination of volcanic scenery, dense woodland, and reflective water makes the lake one of Gunma's most popular scenic destinations outside of the onsen resorts. The cafe operates seasonally from April through November, taking advantage of the lake's spring cherry blossom season, summer greenery, and autumn foliage period. The kitchen focuses on freshwater trout sourced from Haruna Lake and local highland fish farms — reflecting the region's cold, oxygen-rich waters that are well suited to trout cultivation. The freshwater trout sashimi, sliced from fish harvested close to service time, is presented with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled vegetables. The grilled rainbow trout set — a whole trout salted and cooked until the skin crisps and the flesh flakes cleanly — is served with rice, miso soup, and pickles as a complete set meal. Soft-cream ice cream, made in seasonal Gunma fruit flavours, is the most popular item on warmer days and is consumed by most visitors regardless of whether they order a full meal. The cafe occupies a single-storey lakefront structure with window seating and an outdoor terrace facing the water directly. The lake is ringed with walking paths, rowing boat hire, and picnic areas; the cafe functions as a natural midpoint rest stop on the lakeside loop. Haruna Lake is reached by car from Takasaki in approximately 40 minutes, or by seasonal tourist bus from Takasaki Station during the busiest months.
