Gifu Prefecture occupies the heart of Honshu, stretching from the UNESCO-listed thatched villages of Shirakawa-go through the Hida mountain range to the cormorant-fishing rivers of Gifu City. Gifu Prefecture has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. The Hida mountain region in the north (Takayama, Shirakawa-go) experiences heavier snowfall and cooler temperatures year-round than the lowland Gifu City area. Summer is hot and humid in the valleys; winters are cold with substantial snowfall above 500m. The prefecture sits in a typhoon corridor, with most storms arriving August–September.

Takayama Festival
One of Japan's three most beautiful festivals, featuring elaborately decorated floats (yatai) paraded through Takayama Old Town. Spring festival around April 14–15; autumn festival October 9–10. Very crowded — book accommodation 6 months ahead.
Gujo Odori
A 400-year-old circle dance festival held nightly in Gujo Hachiman streets. Peak on the 'dance-all-night' dates (four nights around Obon). Free participation; wearing a yukata is optional but delightful.
Shirakawa-go Snow Illumination
The UNESCO village is lit with hundreds of lanterns on specific winter evenings, creating one of Japan's most photographed scenes. Shuttle bus required; book through the village office at vill.shirakawa.lg.jp.
Mino Washi Akari Festival
The entire Udatsu street in Mino City is illuminated with handmade washi paper lanterns from 17:00 to 21:00. Free entry; one of Japan's best small-town autumn events.
Seki Hamono Matsuri
Seki City's annual blade festival with live sword-forging demonstrations, blade-polishing displays, and heavily discounted factory sales. Free entry.
Hida Furukawa Okoshi Daiko
A dramatic midnight drum festival where participants attempt to enter a sacred shrine lantern while others defend it — one of Japan's most intense festivals. No reservation needed.
