Most paid attractions open 9:00–17:00. Ukai runs evenings only (May–October). Mountain areas may close winter roads October–May.
Fees
Most major attractions cost ¥200–¥700 (~$1.30–$4.50). Shirakawa-go individual houses ¥300 each. Gero Onsen foot baths free.
Best Times
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer best weather and scenery. Winter is spectacular but requires planning.
Booking
Ukai dinner boats must be booked ahead at ukai.gifu.jp or +81-58-262-0104. Ryokan stays in Gero, Takayama, and Shirakawa-go should be booked 1–3 months ahead, especially for weekends and Obon.

How do I get from Gifu City to Shirakawa-go?

The most convenient route is a direct highway bus from Nagoya (2h, ¥3,500 ~$22.60) or from Takayama Bus Terminal (50 min, ¥2,470 ~$15.95) or Kanazawa (75 min, ¥2,000 ~$12.90). There is no train service to Shirakawa-go.

Is the Nagara River ukai worth seeing?

The cormorant fishing is a genuinely unique 1,300-year-old tradition and one of Japan's most dramatic cultural experiences. Dinner boats provide the most immersive view; budget viewing boats are also available. Season runs May–October.

Do I need a car to explore Gifu Prefecture?

A car is strongly recommended for mountain areas including the gorges, Maze, and Okuhida. Shirakawa-go, Takayama, Gero, and Gifu City are all accessible by public transport. Car rental is available at Gifu Station and Takayama Station from ¥6,000/day (~$38.70).

What is Hida beef and where can I try it?
