Gifu Prefecture holds a pivotal place in Japanese history as the power base of Oda Nobunaga, the 16th-century warlord who began Japan's unification. The region's mountainous terrain shaped its history profoundly — isolation preserved unique architectural traditions like the gassho-zukuri farmhouses of Shirakawa-go, while the Nagara River's resources sustained centuries of cormorant fishing (ukai). The Nakasendo highway, one of the five Edo-period roads connecting Edo to Kyoto, passed through the southern part of the prefecture via the Kiso Valley post towns of Magome and Nakatsu.
