Grand-Bassam Beach

Grand-Bassam Beach runs along the Atlantic-facing shore of Grand-Bassam, a UNESCO World Heritage colonial town in the Sud-Comoé Region, about 40 km east of Plateau. The sand is fine and golden, backed by rows of coconut palms and, closer to the historic Quartier France, by weathered colonial-era buildings and beachfront hotels such as Etoile du Sud and Coucou Beach. The beach is long and mostly open to the ocean, so swell and undertow can build quickly, particularly outside the sheltered stretches directly in front of hotel beach clubs; the water is markedly clearer here than at Vridi, though still often tinged by coastal currents rather than turquoise. The atmosphere is a mix of family holiday and social weekend outing: Ivorian families set up for the day near the hotel frontages, horse riders lead guided rides along the firmer sand near the waterline, and beach volleyball games form spontaneously in the late afternoon. Souvenir sellers, wood-carving vendors and fabric traders work the paths between the hotels and the Quartier France, and it is common practice to negotiate prices firmly but politely. Sun loungers and parasols are available at the beachfront hotels for a small day fee even for non-guests, though there is no public lifeguard service covering the open stretches away from hotel frontages, and undertow is strong enough that swimming is best kept close to shore. Grand-Bassam is reached from Adjamé or Treichville gare routière by shared gbaka or minibus in roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, or by private taxi or ride-hail along the Route de Bassam in 45 to 60 minutes; parking is available informally near the hotels and the historic quarter.
