Enoteca Mascareta

Enoteca Mascareta is a much-loved wine bar in the Castello district of Venice, on the Calle Lunga Santa Maria Formosa not far from the Campo Santa Maria Formosa. It built its reputation under the late Mauro Lorenzon, a flamboyant and knowledgeable wine advocate whose bow-tie-clad presence became part of Venetian nightlife folklore, and the bar continues to champion the natural and small-grower wines he favoured. The atmosphere is warm, informal and a little theatrical: candlelit tables, walls lined with bottles, and a soundtrack that stays in the background. The crowd is a mix of wine-loving locals, in-the-know visitors and Venetians out late, drawn by the bar's unusually generous opening hours in a city that often closes early. The drinks programme is the heart of the experience — an extensive list strong on natural wines, Veneto regionals such as Prosecco, Soave and Valpolicella, and harder-to-find bottles, almost all available by the glass for tasting. To accompany the wine there is a spread of cicchetti and cheese and charcuterie boards, plus more substantial plates for those settling in for the evening. Prices are mid-range: glasses are fairly priced for the quality, and a board with a couple of glasses makes for an affordable evening, though rarer bottles climb higher. Service runs from the evening through to a late close, making it a reliable spot for a nightcap after dinner when much of the city has shut. Reservations are wise at weekends and for groups, as the small room fills quickly; otherwise visitors can turn up and perch at the bar. With its sincere focus on small producers and its late hours, Enoteca Mascareta remains one of the most characterful and atmospheric wine bars in Venice.
