La Bottega del Vino

La Bottega del Vino is a wine bar and restaurant tucked just off Via del Sole near Perugia's Duomo, best known for a small panoramic terrace that looks out over the Umbrian rooftops and countryside. As its name suggests, the focus is the cellar: an extensive list of Umbrian wines, with deep representation of Sagrantino di Montefalco, Grechetto, Trebbiano Spoletino and Torgiano, available by bottle and with a generous rotation by the glass. The food is built to partner the wine rather than upstage it. Boards of regional salumi and cheese - prosciutto, capocollo, pecorino and local cured meats - are the natural way to begin, followed by strangozzi al tartufo, the hand-cut Umbrian pasta with black truffle that is the kitchen's signature, and a short list of regional secondi. The setting is relaxed and convivial, more enoteca than formal restaurant, with snug interior rooms for cooler evenings and the coveted terrace tables for warm nights. Noise level is gentle, the mood unhurried, and dress is casual. Staff are well versed in the list and happy to steer guests toward lesser-known local producers or to assemble a flight that traces Umbria's main grapes. The restaurant runs Tuesday to Saturday, roughly noon to 2:30PM and from 7PM late into the evening, and is closed Sunday and Monday. Prices are mid-to-upper for Perugia, with wine the main variable - it is easy to keep a meal modest with a board and a glass, or to climb steeply by exploring older Sagrantino vintages. The terrace is the draw, and its handful of tables book out fast on summer evenings and at sunset, so reserving ahead and specifically requesting an outdoor table is strongly advised. Visitors more interested in serious food than the view may prefer to come for an early aperitivo and a board before the dinner rush.
