Castello di Reschio occupies a thousand-year-old hilltop castle on a private 1,500-hectare estate in the Niccone Valley near Lisciano Niccone, on the border between Umbria and Tuscany. The setting is rural and secluded, roughly 40 minutes by car from Perugia and Cortona and about 90 minutes from Florence, with Lake Trasimeno close by. Architect Count Benedikt Bolza, whose family owns the estate, spent two decades restoring the castle and its outbuildings before the hotel opened in 2021. Interiors combine exposed stone, vaulted ceilings, antique pieces and bespoke furnishings from the on-site Bolza design atelier, giving the property the feel of a lived-in aristocratic home rather than a standard luxury hotel. The 36 individually designed rooms and suites deliberately exclude televisions to encourage a digital slowdown; many include open fireplaces, freestanding tubs, four-poster beds and sweeping views over forest and olive groves. Dining revolves around the estate's own produce, olive oil and wine: the main restaurant and the relaxed Palm Court serve seasonal Umbrian and Italian dishes, while an enoteca showcases Reschio's biodynamic vintages. The Bathhouse spa, set in the former wine cellars beneath the castle, features a candlelit heated pool, hammam, sauna and treatment rooms in a dramatic vaulted space. Beyond wellness, guests can ride the estate's grey Andalusian horses from the equestrian centre, walk or cycle the trails, tour the cantina, or join cooking and wine experiences. The service character is intimate and bespoke, with a small team tailoring each stay and few other guests on the vast estate. Rates generally range from about EUR 1,200 to EUR 3,500 per night, making Reschio one of the most exclusive rural retreats in central Italy and a destination in its own right rather than a base for sightseeing.
