Bevagna

Bevagna is one of the most beautifully preserved small towns in central Umbria, set on the flat Valle Umbra along the route of the ancient Via Flaminia, the Roman road that brought it prosperity as the town of Mevania. Its enclosed historic centre, ringed by medieval walls, is quietly atmospheric and remarkably free of modern intrusion. The heart of the town is the irregular, gently sloping Piazza Filippo Silvestri, an unusually harmonious medieval square framed by two fine Romanesque churches, San Silvestro and San Michele Arcangelo, both 12th-century and built in part with reused Roman stone, alongside the Gothic Palazzo dei Consoli, which houses a small 19th-century theatre. From the Roman period survives a striking black-and-white floor mosaic of sea creatures, dolphins, tritons and an octopus, from the town's ancient baths, kept under cover and visited for a small fee, along with traces of a temple and theatre embedded in later buildings. Bevagna is best enjoyed slowly on foot, wandering its quiet lanes, looking into artisan workshops, and pausing in the square, with a typical visit lasting an hour and a half to two hours. The town comes vividly alive each June for the Mercato delle Gaite, a popular re-enactment in which the four quarters recreate medieval crafts, trades and food in costume, drawing visitors from across the region. It lies a short drive from Foligno and Montefalco in the Valle Umbra, easily combined with them, and is loveliest on a quiet weekday or in the soft light of late afternoon.
