The Rocca della Verruca stands on the summit of the Verruca, on the eastern edge of the Monte Pisano between the municipalities of Vicopisano and Calci, about 15 km east of central Pisa. Written records place a fortress here before the year 1000, and the church of San Michele Arcangelo at the base of the hill dates from roughly the same period.

A short climb on the eastern end of the Monte Pisano to the ruins of the Rocca della Verruca, a Pisan lookout fortress documented before the year 1000. Olive groves and woodland lead to a hilltop with views over the Arno plain, Pisa and the coast.

Under the Pisan Republic the rocca served as a lookout over Pisa and the Arno valley, and later it was fought over by Pisa and Florence. Tradition links Leonardo da Vinci to a Florentine commission to strengthen the defences in the early 1500s, when Florence was studying ways to divert the Arno away from Pisa.

Most walkers drive to Vicopisano and follow a largely unpaved road toward the hill, then walk roughly 20 minutes to the ruins. A longer route climbs from Calci through olive groves, or links the two villages in a loop of several hours. The trails belong to the Monte Pisano network, which the Pisa section of the CAI marks with white-and-red paint; the axial path is numbered 00, with side routes numbered by the municipalities.

The ruins are open-air and unfenced, so no ticket is needed. Opening hours and admission are not published on the regional tourism page; treat the site as an open hilltop and avoid visiting in strong wind or after storms. Bars and restaurants are in Calci and Vicopisano, not on the hill.

Highlights

  • Ruins of a medieval fortress contested by Pisa and Florence, with several recorded sieges
  • Church of San Michele Arcangelo at the foot of the hill, built around the same period as the first fortress
  • Views across the Arno plain toward Pisa, Livorno and the Tyrrhenian coast
  • Olive terraces and Mediterranean woodland on both the Calci and Vicopisano approaches

Tips for visiting

  • Check the Pisa section of the Club Alpino Italiano or the Calci and Vicopisano municipal offices for path closures before setting out; the Monte Pisano burned heavily in 2018 and some paths have since been re-routed.
  • Carry water: there is no reliable fountain on the final approach to the fortress.
  • Start early in summer; the south-facing slopes are exposed and hot from late morning.
  • Leave the car in Vicopisano village rather than on the narrow unpaved road, which has limited passing places.
  • Combine the walk with the Rocca of Vicopisano in the village below, which retains a medieval tower system attributed in tradition to Brunelleschi.

When to visit

Spring (March-May) for wildflowers and clear air, and autumn (October-November) for cool weather; avoid midday in July and August.

Accessibility

Not wheelchair-accessible; the road end is reachable by car but the final approach is a rough footpath. Suitable for children who can walk 20-30 minutes on uneven ground.
