The Basilica di San Miniato al Monte stands on a hill in the Oltrarno above Piazzale Michelangelo, overlooking the full panorama of Florence. One of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany, begun in 1018 on the site of an early Christian oratory, the church features a facade in bands of green serpentine and white Carrara marble — considered one of the most beautiful in Italy. The lower register has five blind arcades with Corinthian capitals; the upper part features a 13th-century mosaic of Christ Enthroned between the Virgin and Saint Miniato.
