The vast Pitti Palace across the Arno from Florence's center was the main residence of the Medici grand dukes and later the House of Savoy. The Palatine Gallery on the first floor contains one of Italy's richest collections of paintings displayed in a deliberately lavish arrangement, including masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, Rubens, and Caravaggio.
