Lucca's perfectly preserved 16th and 17th-century Renaissance walls (4.2 km circumference) are the only such walls in Europe that remain completely intact and are wide enough at the top to serve as a tree-lined public park where locals and visitors cycle and stroll. Twelve bastions and four gates form the circuit.
