Fontane Bianche Beach

Fontane Bianche is one of the most popular beaches in south-east Sicily, lying a short drive south of Syracuse in the namesake resort of the Syracuse province. Its name, meaning white fountains, comes from the freshwater springs that once bubbled up in the bay, and the beach is known for a long, gently curving stretch of soft, pale sand that shelves slowly into clear, shallow, turquoise water, conditions that make it especially well suited to families with young children. The bay is partly backed by low dunes and Mediterranean pines that give patches of natural shade, while a strip of beach clubs, lidos, bars, and seafood restaurants runs behind, alongside free public sections of sand. In the warm months visitors can rent sunbeds and umbrellas, hire pedalos and kayaks, or try other watersports, and the calm, protected water is good for easy swimming and snorkelling near the rocks at the bay's edges. A relaxed beach visit fills a half to full day, and the resort makes an easy seaside complement to sightseeing in Ortigia and ancient Syracuse just up the coast. The water is calmest and the sand quietest in the early morning and late afternoon; summer weekends and August see the beach crowded with local and visiting families. Facilities operate mainly from late spring through September, while the beach itself is open year-round. As with much of the Sicilian coast, sun protection matters, and arriving early secures a good spot in peak season on this stretch of south-eastern Sicily.
