Mondello's sheltered bay, framed by Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo, gives flat early water and a dependable afternoon sea breeze close to the city, while San Vito Lo Capo offers a wider, less built-up beach beneath the dramatic headland of Monte Monaco. Certified watersports schools at both sites — affiliated with windsurfing and sailing federations such as the FIV and international bodies — run lessons and rent rigs by the hour. Beginners start on large, stable boards with small sails in waist-deep water, progressing through balance, sail handling, and steering, while intermediates can hire larger or smaller rigs to match the wind. Equipment hire and lessons typically include the board, sail, and a buoyancy aid, with wetsuit rental available; instructors give a safety briefing covering the right-of-way rules, the wind and current pattern, staying within the supervised area, and the signal to return or be picked up by the school's rescue boat or board. Participants should bring a swimsuit, sun protection, a hat, water shoes, and a rash vest, as the midday sun is strong.
