Rock climbing at Alcamo and Castelluzzo is sport and multi-pitch climbing on the sun-warmed limestone above the Gulf of Castellammare in north-west Sicily's Trapani province. The crags around Castelluzzo and San Vito Lo Capo have made this corner of the island one of the Mediterranean's most popular winter and shoulder-season climbing destinations, with hundreds of bolted routes on grey and orange limestone walls that rise straight from the coast with sea views below. The climbing spans a wide range of difficulty: well-bolted single-pitch sport routes at gentle grades are ideal for beginners and improvers, while steep tufa-streaked walls and longer multi-pitch lines challenge experienced climbers. Guided sessions and courses are run by qualified instructors who provide the technical kit — harness, helmet, climbing shoes, rope, and protection — and teach belaying, movement, and clipping on real rock, making a half-day accessible to those who have never climbed. The lowest meaningful experience here is a guided beginner session at an easy sector, which is why the activity is graded moderate overall even though harder routes exist on the same cliffs. Instructors deliver a safety briefing covering knots, belay checks, communication calls, loose-rock awareness, and the lower-off and retreat plan, and they manage the rope and anchors throughout. Climbers should wear comfortable active clothing and bring water, snacks, a hat, and sun protection, as many sectors are sunny and exposed; chalk and approach shoes are useful, and operators can advise on or supply shoes for those without. The limestone is best when dry and cool, so the prime seasons are March to May and September to November, with mild winter days also good; summer is often too hot on the south-facing rock for comfortable climbing.
