Piedmont (Piemonte) is a large region in northwest Italy, ringed on three sides by the Alps and sloping down toward the Po Valley. Its capital, Turin, is a city of elegant arcades, royal palaces, and the landmark Mole Antonelliana. Beyond the city lie the UNESCO-listed vineyards of the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato, home to Barolo and Barbaresco wines and Alba's prized white truffles, plus the serene shores of Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. Piedmont is the birthplace of vermouth, gianduja chocolate, and the Slow Food movement.
Piedmont has a continental climate, shaped by its position at the foot of the Alps and within the Po Valley. Winters are cold and often foggy (Turin January 1-7°C), with heavy snow in the surrounding mountains for the Sestriere ski season, while summers are warm and humid (Turin July 20-30°C) with occasional violent thunderstorms. Spring and autumn are the finest times to visit, with the Alba truffle fair animating October and November. The Po Valley is prone to dense fog (nebbia) in late autumn and winter, while the lakes around Maggiore and Orta enjoy a milder, more sheltered microclimate from May to September.

Spring
Months: Mar-May
Mild and increasingly green (12-22°C), with blossom in the Langhe vineyards and orchards and snow lingering on the high peaks. Turin's gardens and the lakeside towns awaken, and conditions are ideal for the wine country and city sightseeing before summer heat.
Summer
Months: Jun-Aug
Warm and humid in the lowlands (Turin 20-30°C) with occasional thunderstorms and hail. The Alpine valleys around Gran Paradiso and Sestriere offer a cool refuge, and the lakes are perfect for swimming and boating. August can feel sultry in Turin, when many city businesses close for the holidays.
Fall
Months: Sep-Nov
September and October are superb, with the grape harvest, the Alba white truffle fair, and crisp golden light over the vineyards. November brings cooling temperatures and the first Po Valley fogs, but the truffle season and new wines make it a rich time for food lovers.
Winter
Months: Dec-Feb
Cold and frequently foggy in Turin and the plains (January 1-7°C), with heavy snow in the mountains driving the Sestriere and Vialattea ski season. Turin glows with Christmas lights and the Luci d'Artista installations, while the wine villages are quiet and atmospheric.
