Liguria is a narrow, crescent-shaped region in northwest Italy, hugging the Mediterranean between the Alps, the Apennines, and the sea. Known as the Italian Riviera, it is famous for the five cliffside villages of the Cinque Terre, the glamorous harbour of Portofino, and the maritime city of Genoa. Liguria is also the birthplace of pesto, focaccia, and a culinary tradition built around the sea and the steep, terraced coast.
Liguria enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate moderated by the sea and sheltered from cold northern air by the Maritime Alps and Apennines. The Riviera coast rarely sees frost, with mild wet winters (January 8-13°C) and warm dry summers (July-August 28-30°C, sea around 25°C). Genoa is among Italy's rainiest cities by total rainfall, though precipitation is concentrated in intense autumn bursts peaking in October and November. The inland hills and mountains are cooler, with occasional winter snow above the coast.

Spring
Months: Mar-May
Mild temperatures (15-22°C), blooming gardens, and quiet trails make spring ideal. The Cinque Terre and Portofino are pleasant before summer crowds, and Genoa's Euroflora and Rolli Days animate the season. May brings Camogli's Sagra del Pesce.
Summer
Months: Jun-Aug
Warm and dry (28-30°C) with sea temperatures around 25°C, perfect for swimming. July and August are peak season with packed beaches and severe Cinque Terre overtourism. Sea breezes temper the heat along the Riviera.
Fall
Months: Sep-Nov
September is excellent with warm sea, the Cinque Terre grape harvest, and the Genoa Boat Show. October and November bring the heaviest rainfall and occasional intense storms, but early autumn is one of the finest times to visit.
Winter

Mild on the coast (8-13°C) with little frost, though wet. The Sanremo Music Festival animates February. Cinque Terre villages are quiet and some businesses close; Genoa stays lively and uncrowded.
