Punta Mesco from Monterosso to Levanto

The Punta Mesco walk crosses the wooded headland that forms the northern boundary of the Cinque Terre, linking Monterosso al Mare with the larger seaside town of Levanto across about 9 kilometres of ridge and coastal path in the province of La Spezia. From Monterosso the trail climbs steadily through olive terraces and Mediterranean maquis onto the Mesco promontory, gaining around 450 metres of cumulative ascent before levelling along a forested ridge of pine and holm oak. The headland is crowned by the ruins of the medieval hermitage and church of Sant'Antonio del Mesco, beside an old semaphore signal station and a wartime coastal lookout, from where the path reaches a celebrated belvedere offering arguably the best single panorama of the entire Cinque Terre, with all five villages strung along the coast far below and the open sea beyond. The route then descends through woodland toward Levanto, emerging at the town's broad sandy beach, a popular surfing and swimming spot well served by trains back to the Cinque Terre. The trail uses the standard CAI red-and-white waymarks and is generally well maintained, with a surface of natural dirt, stone, and rock that can be slippery when wet. Shade is good along the ridge but the climb out of Monterosso is exposed and warm in summer, so water and sun protection are recommended; fountains are limited until Levanto. Because both ends are railway stations on the Cinque Terre line, the walk is easily done as a one-way hike with a short train return, and it can be combined with the main Sentiero Azzurro for a longer day. Quieter than the crowded inter-village paths yet delivering the definitive Cinque Terre panorama, the Punta Mesco traverse is a rewarding half-day for hikers seeking views without the heaviest crowds.
