Portovenere & Gulf of Poets from La Spezia

Portovenere lies just 12 km from La Spezia at the southern tip of the Gulf of La Spezia - the Golfo dei Poeti, named for the Romantic writers Byron and Shelley who haunted these shores. From La Spezia the easiest options are the ATC bus line 11/P (about 30 minutes) or, in season, a Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti ferry (around 40 minutes, roughly EUR 15 return) from the Passeggiata Morin waterfront; the boat approach is the more memorable, sweeping past the islands toward the village's wall of tower-houses. Though it belongs to the same UNESCO-listed area as the Cinque Terre, Portovenere is generally calmer and makes a relaxed full day. The signature sight is the Gothic Church of San Pietro, set dramatically on a rocky spur above the sea, beside Byron's Grotto, the sea cave from which the poet is said to have swum across the gulf. Above the village rises the Doria Castle, reached through steep stepped lanes, with sweeping views over the harbour and out to Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto islands. A natural one-day arc: arrive mid-morning, wander the colourful Calata Doria seafront and climb to San Pietro and the castle before lunch, then take an afternoon boat to Palmaria Island for swimming, sea caves, and the cool of the Grotta Azzurra. Lunch is best along the harbour, where trattorie serve Ligurian seafood, mussels (muscoli) farmed in the gulf, trofie al pesto, and the local focaccia. The trip pairs naturally with Lerici across the water for a complete circuit of the Gulf of Poets, or with the Cinque Terre, of which Portovenere is the southern gateway. Visiting on a shoulder-season weekday keeps crowds down and ferries running, while summer offers the warmest swimming around Palmaria's rocky coves.
