Corniglia

Corniglia is the quiet heart of the Cinque Terre, the only one of the five villages not set directly on the sea. Instead it sits on a clifftop promontory about 100 metres above the water, wrapped on three sides by terraced vineyards and reached either by climbing the 377 brick steps of the zig-zag Lardarina staircase from the railway station below or by a shuttle bus. The reward for the climb is a compact, peaceful village of tall narrow houses, a single main street lined with small shops and wine bars, the Gothic Church of San Pietro, and the Santa Maria belvedere terrace, from which the view sweeps along the whole Cinque Terre coastline. Because it lacks a harbour and is harder to reach, Corniglia stays noticeably calmer than the seaside villages, especially in the middle of the day when the others are at their busiest, making it the best lunch stop for travellers seeking a slower pace. A visit takes two to three hours. The terraced setting and the coastal panorama from the belvedere are the standout photographs. Swimming is awkward here, reached only by a long stairway to a small rocky cove, so most visitors come for the views and the village atmosphere rather than the beach. Corniglia is reached only by the Cinque Terre Express train, with no ferry stop. The shuttle bus from the station spares walkers the 377 steps. As the smallest and most tranquil village in this part of eastern Liguria, it pairs naturally with hikes along the surrounding trails.
