The Beigua UNESCO Global Geopark is the largest protected area in Liguria, covering around 40,000 hectares of mountain and coast spread across the provinces of Savona and Genoa, where the Ligurian Alps and Apennines meet the sea. Centred on the Monte Beigua massif, which rises to 1,287 metres only a few kilometres from the shore, the geopark earned UNESCO recognition for its exceptional geology, in particular its extensive ophiolites, slices of ancient ocean floor and Earth's mantle pushed up and exposed at the surface, prized by geologists worldwide. For visitors the draw is the landscape and the outdoors: a dense network of marked hiking and mountain-biking trails, including stretches of the long-distance Alta Via dei Monti Liguri ridge route, panoramic summits with views over the Riviera and, on clear days, to the Alps and Corsica, beech woods, high bogs and rare plants. The geopark is also one of Italy's premier sites for watching the spring migration of raptors, when thousands of honey buzzards and other birds of prey stream over the ridge. Visitor centres, including the Palazzo Gervino in Sassello and others around the park, provide maps, exhibitions and guided-walk information. A visit can be anything from a half-day walk to a full day or more. The ridge panoramas and the spring raptor flights are the highlights for photographers.
