Salotto 42 is a stylish lounge-bar facing directly onto Piazza della Rotonda, with one of the best views in Rome — the floodlit columns of the Pantheon — from its outdoor tables. The name means 'living room', and the interior plays the part: a designer space scattered with coffee-table art books, mid-century furniture, soft lighting and a curated, magazine-spread aesthetic created by its Swedish-Italian ownership. The crowd is chic and international, leaning 28-50, a mix of well-heeled Romans, design lovers and travellers; dress is smart and the mood is relaxed and sophisticated rather than raucous. It works for a morning coffee, a daytime read among the books or, most memorably, an evening aperitivo with the Pantheon glowing across the square. The drinks programme spans well-made cocktails and a thoughtful wine selection, with an aperitivo spread of nibbles in the early evening. Given the address and the setting, prices sit at the higher end — cocktails commonly €15-18 — and much of what you pay for is the location and ambience.
