Freni e Frizioni — Italian for 'brakes and clutches' — occupies a former mechanic's garage above the Tiber in Trastevere, and the industrial name still suits its slightly bohemian, art-bar character. Since the mid-2000s it has been one of Rome's defining aperitivo destinations, drawing a young, fashionable crowd of students, creatives and travellers who spill out onto the Piazza Trilussa steps and the riverside terrace on warm nights. The interior mixes raw garage bones with eclectic décor and rotating art; there is no dress code and the age range centres on the 22-40 bracket. By mid-evening the place is heaving, the atmosphere loud, social and distinctly Trastevere. The signature is the aperitivo: buy a drink in the early evening and gain access to a generous buffet of pasta, salads, vegetables and finger food included in the price, a Roman institution that turns a cocktail into a light dinner. Cocktails themselves are creative and well made — fresh-fruit and herb-forward mixes alongside the classics — typically around €8-10, which covers buffet access during aperitivo hours. The bar also pours wine and beer, but the inventive cocktails are the calling card. Music is a DJ-leaning mix of nu-disco, funk and house kept at conversational-to-lively volume rather than club intensity, setting an upbeat mood without a dancefloor. Doors open in the early evening, around 6:30-7PM for aperitivo, and run late into the night, with the buffet laid out for the first hours and the crowd peaking after dark; weekends are busiest. There is no cover charge or formal reservation system for the bar, and no bottle service — securing a spot on a busy night is about arriving early and being prepared to mingle on the steps outside.
