Circeo National Park and Sabaudia

Circeo National Park, about 100km south of Rome on the Lazio coast, is the region's only national park and a varied outdoor day trip combining a dramatic limestone promontory, coastal dunes, freshwater lakes and a protected marine reserve. It is best reached by car via the SS148 Pontina in around 1 hour 15 minutes, as public transport takes nearer 1 hour 45 minutes by bus from the EUR Fermi Metro to Sabaudia; a car also makes it far easier to link the park's scattered highlights in one day. The centrepiece is Monte Circeo, the 541-metre headland linked in myth to Homer's sorceress Circe, whose summit trail climbs through Mediterranean scrub to sweeping views over the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Pontine plain; the hike is the most demanding element and rates the trip as moderate for active visitors. Below lie Sabaudia's long dune-backed beaches, one of central Italy's finest stretches of sand, and Lake Paola (Lago di Sabaudia), a coastal lagoon ideal for kayaking and birdwatching among herons and other wetland species. The marine reserve offshore rewards snorkelling in clear, protected water. A satisfying day starts with the summit hike in the cooler morning, follows with a beach swim and lakeside kayak in the afternoon, and ends with a seafood lunch or aperitivo in Sabaudia, a town also notable for its striking 1930s rationalist architecture. Late spring and early autumn give warm but comfortable conditions for hiking and swimming alike, while summer suits the beaches but brings heat on the exposed trail and busier shores; an early start beats both the midday sun and parking pressure. Circeo offers Lazio visitors a rare combination of mountain, dune, lagoon and sea within a single coastal park.
