Viterbo: Medieval City and Thermal Baths

Viterbo lies 80km north of Rome in northern Lazio and counts among Italy's best-preserved medieval cities, an easy day trip combining a walled historic centre with relaxing thermal waters. The FL3 regional train from Rome Ostiense reaches Viterbo Porta Fiorentina in about 1 hour 40 minutes for roughly €8 each way; the station sits a short walk from the old town, so no further transport is needed for the city itself. A natural one-day plan begins in the morning with the historic core, entering through the medieval gates to reach the Palazzo dei Papi, the 13th-century Papal Palace whose elegant loggia overlooks the valley and which served as a papal seat during the era of the Viterbo conclaves. From there the atmospheric San Pellegrino quarter rewards slow wandering, its tufa-stone lanes, external staircases (profferli), arches and small squares forming one of the most complete medieval streetscapes in central Italy. The nearby Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Piazza del Plebiscito with its civic palaces round out the morning. After lunch at one of the old-town trattorias serving Tuscia specialities such as lombrichelli pasta and acquacotta soup, the afternoon suits a soak at the Terme dei Papi, the historic sulphurous thermal spa about 3km outside town reachable by local bus or taxi, where the large open-air pool draws on hot mineral springs known since Roman times. Free natural thermal pools at the nearby Bullicame are an alternative for those on a budget. Spring and autumn bring the most pleasant walking weather, while the thermal baths are especially enjoyable in the cooler months; arriving mid-morning leaves time for both the town and an unhurried afternoon at the spa. Viterbo showcases Lazio beyond Rome, blending papal history, medieval architecture and volcanic thermal heritage in a single relaxed excursion.
