Bomarzo Monster Park and Northern Lazio

Bomarzo, about 90km north of Rome in the Tuscia area of northern Lazio, is home to the surreal Parco dei Mostri, or Park of the Monsters, a 16th-century garden of colossal grotesque sculptures carved directly from the volcanic bedrock that makes one of Italy's strangest and most memorable day trips. Commissioned around 1552 by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini and designed in part by the architect Pirro Ligorio, the wooded park scatters giant figures along its paths: an ogre's gaping mouth that doubles as a dining grotto, a war elephant crushing a soldier, a dragon, a giant tearing apart a rival, sea monsters and a deliberately tilted leaning house that disorients visitors. Reaching Bomarzo without a car involves the FL3 regional train to Orte followed by a COTRAL bus, taking around two hours in total, while driving via the A1 autostrada takes about 1 hour 20 minutes and allows the park to be combined with other northern Lazio sights. A relaxed day spends a couple of hours wandering the sculpture trail, which involves easy walking on woodland paths and some steps, then pairs it with a nearby attraction: the medieval papal city of Viterbo with its thermal baths, or the crater Lake Vico (Lago di Vico) nature reserve for a lakeside walk and picnic. Lunch at a trattoria in Bomarzo village or Viterbo, serving Tuscia specialities and local wine, fits naturally between the two. Spring and autumn bring mild weather and lush greenery that suit the mossy stone monsters, while summer can be hot and the park busier with families; arriving at opening gives the quietest, most atmospheric walk among the figures. Bomarzo offers Lazio visitors a genuinely offbeat Renaissance curiosity within easy reach of Rome.
