Pompeii Archaeological Park

Pompeii Archaeological Park, located just outside the modern town of Pompeii in the Campania region of Italy, stands as one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological sites. When Mount Vesuvius erupted catastrophically in 79 AD, it buried this thriving Roman city of approximately 11,000 people under several metres of volcanic ash and pumice, preserving it for nearly 2,000 years. Visitors enter through the Porta Marina gate and walk along basalt-paved streets flanked by remarkably intact homes, bakeries, thermopolia (ancient fast-food stalls), bathhouses, and temples. The Forum, Pompeii's civic and commercial heart, is flanked by the Temple of Jupiter and the Basilica, giving a vivid sense of Roman urban planning. The House of the Vettii displays outstanding frescoes and mosaics, while the Villa of the Mysteries on the site's western edge contains extraordinary red-painted frescoes depicting Dionysiac initiation rituals. Perhaps the most emotionally affecting exhibits are the plaster casts of victims preserved in their final moments, housed in the Garden of the Fugitives and scattered across the site. The Amphitheatre, dating to 70 BC and the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre, accommodated 20,000 spectators. Visitors should plan a minimum of four to six hours, though a full day allows genuine exploration. The site becomes extremely crowded between 10 AM and 2 PM in summer; early morning or late afternoon visits offer calmer conditions and better light for photography. The main entrance on Via Villa dei Misteri provides access to the official visitor centre and ticket office. Children under 18 enter free.
