Napoli Sotterranea (Underground Naples)

Beneath the streets of Naples' historic center in Campania, Italy, lies one of the most extensive urban underground networks in the world: a labyrinthine system of tunnels, cisterns, chambers, and passages excavated through soft volcanic tufa rock over more than 2,400 years of continuous use, beginning with Greek quarrying of building stone for the city of Neapolis in the 5th century BC. The quarried voids were later converted by the Romans into a municipal aqueduct system that supplied water to the city for over 1,000 years until a cholera epidemic in 1884 led to the network's abandonment and sealing. During World War II, the tunnels were rediscovered and repurposed as air raid shelters for Naples' population; the wartime occupation left traces—graffiti, personal objects, improvised sleeping areas—still visible today. Napoli Sotterranea, the principal guided tour operator at Piazza San Gaetano 68, offers tours of approximately 90 minutes through this layered history. The standard route descends via a steep staircase approximately 40 metres below street level into Roman-era cisterns and aqueduct channels, passes through narrow passages cut through tufa, and visits the WWII shelter area where wartime archaeology is well presented. A separate route traverses a reconstruction of the ancient Greek theatre discovered directly beneath the Piazza San Gaetano. Several competing underground tour operators offer different aspects of the network. The temperature underground remains a constant 14°C year-round, making it a pleasant respite in Naples' summer heat while requiring a light layer in cooler months.
